2012 Season

Feb 20, 2012

Welcome to another year of Port Coquitlam Minor Baseball. Our season starts this coming Sunday February 26 with workout sessions. While games don't start until April, preseason is ready to begin. (The first game was April 1 in 2011; the 2012 schedule has not yet been created).

Like all years, there will be a draft for Pewee players, held the week of March 5. This helps to create balanced teams to maximize competitiveness in Poco and against other cities. "Play with" requests will be considered but can not be guaranteed.

We will be playing in an interlocked league with Ridge-Meadows and Coquitlam-Moody, as we did in 2011.

A series of mandatory workout sessions are listed below. They will all be held at Thompson Park, Port Coquitlam (Cameron Ave at Taylor Street, the big park where the concession and batting cages are located).
Sunday Feb 26: 1pm-3pm
Saturday March 3: 3pm-5pm
Sunday March 4: 12:30pm-2:30 pm

When players arrive at the workout session they will check-in at the registration table, and pick up a label to wear on their shirts.

Workouts will be rain or shine. If there is severe rain we might cancel a workout. The Peewee page http://www.pocominorbaseball.com/peewee will be updated not later than 1 hour before the workout to announce a cancellation due to weather.

Port Coquitlam will not be offering a AA team in 2012. All of the Poco teams will be A (house) tier. Any players wishing to play AA are permitted to try out for the Coquitlam-Moody AA team. Tryouts for AA are at Glenayre Elementary School (495 Glencoe Drive, Port Moody, British Columbia V3H 1G6) on the following dates:
Sunday Feb 26: 10am-12pm
Sunday March 4: 3pm-5pm
Any players trying out for Coquitlam-Moody must also attend the Poco workouts, so that they can be evaluated by Poco coaches in the event that they do not make the AA team. Times have been arranged so that this is possible. AA team selection will be completed by Monday March 5. Home games for the AA team will be held at Coquitlam-Moody fields.

As always, players are to bring their own glove, and athletic support/cup to all sessions.

PeeWee Division
PeeWee 2010 Season Overview
Welcome to another exciting season of PeeWee baseball in Port Coquitlam. The PeeWee division is open to all players under 13 as of December 31st.. This means players born in 1997 or 1998 for the 2010 season. Within PeeWee, there are two divisions during regular season play. These are the House or "A" division and the competitive "AA" division. The regular season begins in March and will go through to the end of June. All players are eligible to play in the "A" or House level division. New players are also welcome. Try-outs are held for the "AA" team and the team is selected from the interested players. For the "A" level or House, a series of workout dates are held to allow each player's skills to be assessed. Our goal is to create "A" level teams of relatively the same skill level in order to have games that are balanced. It is important that "A" level players attend these fun workouts so that they can dust off their baseball skills and be ready for the season.
Season Play
The "A" or House level features inter-locking games with teams from Coquitlam Minor Baseball as well as games against the other Port Coquitlam "A" level House teams. Practices and games will be held on any day of the week or weekend. There are no "set" days.
During the season, all house level "A" teams will play in the Walter Bird tournament. All teams will also participate in a double knockout format playoff at the end of the season. The winner of the playoffs will receive a team trophy that they get to keep until the next ball season. The winner will also play in the Challenge Cup. The Challenge Cup is held each year and features the winner from the Port Coquitlam play-offs playing a game against the winner of the Coquitlam play-offs. The winner gets to retain the cup until the game is played the following season. We are happy to report that the Challenge Cup currently resides with Coquitlam.
The "AA" or competitive level of play will feature games against other "AA" teams from the surrounding associations ranging from Delta to Chilliwack. It is anticipated that there will be a game or practice at least four times a week.
Summer Ball
The second part of the season is summer or All-Star ball. The summer season runs from July through to the end of August. The number of teams that are fielded depends on the level of interest from the players. There is summer ball play at the "AAA", "AA" and "A" levels. The summer season is short but is very active with games and practices. It also is the best time to be playing ball since the weather is terrific.
Depending on the team's results, the AAA team can advance to the provincials to compete against the top teams in the province and then to the Westerns. The Westerns feature the top teams from the Western provinces. The "A" and "AA" team has the opportunity to advance to the provincials and play against the top teams in BC.
We will be canvassing for interested players for summer ball around the mid-point of the regular season.
If you have any questions regarding PeeWee baseball or any comments at all feel free to send them via email to peewee@pocominorbaseball.com. We are looking forward to another great season of great plays, great weather (let's hope), and great memories.
